Nambu World: Japanese Type 30 Bayonets for the Arisaka Rifle. The overall length of a typical Type 30 bayonet is 510 mm (20-1/16”), with the blade comprising 398 mm (15-5/8”) of that. The ball-tipped scabbards are about 415 mm (16-3/8”) long, while the tube-tip scabbards are just a tad shorter (by about 1 mm). Markings on Japanese Arisaka Rifles and Bayonets of World War II The Japanese manufactured over 6.4 million rifles and carbines in the 40 years from 1906 to 1945. Most of these rifles were still in use during the Sino-Japanese War of the 1930s and the Pacific War of the 1940s.

M1905 Bayonet

'The M1905 Bayonet was one of the U.S. most widely used bayonet.'

The M1905 Bayonet was one of the U.S. most widely used bayonet. It was used in both WW1 and WW2. It was originally designed to fit the M1903 Springfield Rifle. Early versions (up until 1918) of the M1905 bayonet had what is referred to as bright, bare metal blades. These were 16″ blades and which included a wooden had grip. After 1918-1922 the blades were Parkerized (phosphate anti-corrosive finish) and Blued and the grips were made from black walnut. From 1922-1939 production was halted. During World War 2 production resumed again. The new bayonets would be produced with bakelite (plastic) black or sometimes brown hand grips. These newer bayonets would sometimes be referred to as M1942, that being the year they were made, but in reality they were still M1905 bayonets with just a modification to the hand grips.

Below are known Serial Numbers for the 1905 SA and 1905 RIA known serial numbers for the years 1906 – 1922. The last manufacture date for the 1905 Springfield bayonet was 1922. The last manufacture date for the 1905 Rock Island bayonet was 1919. Every 1905 bayonet had the manufactured date stamped on the bayonet. There have been know to be a few of these bayonets without date stamps floating around. I believe these may have been produced prior to 1906, since this was the first year serial numbers were used. Most collectable 1905 bayonets will have early manufacture dates, include bright blades with blue strips near hilt. What also seems to be really valuable are the scabbards, these seem sometimes to be worth more than the bayonets themselves.

M1903 Springfield Rifle Bayonets
The M1903 Springfield originally had a rod bayonet, replaced by the M-1905 bayonet in 1905. Later some Springfields used the shorter M-1 bayonet, designed for the M-1 Garand but which will fit the Springfield.

M-1905 Bayonet
The M-1905 Bayonet was issued for both the M-1903 Springfield rifle and the M-1 Garand rifle, serving for four decades until replaced during WW II.

M-1905 Bayonet for the Springfield Rifle
The bayonet for the M-1903 Springfield rifle was originally a rod bayonet, replaced in 1905 with the M-1905 bayonet. When the M-1 Garand rifle became the standard service rifle, this bayonet was still used. The M-1905 bayonet was the standard bayonet from 1905 through World War II and beyond, even though new, shorter bayonets were issued in the 1940s, such as the M-1 ten inch blade for the M-1 Garand.

Description of the M-1905 Bayonet
The first model of the M-1905 bayonet was manufactured between 1906 and 1922 by the Rock Island and Springfield Arsenals (marked SA or RI with the Ordnance Department symbol, along with year and serial number). Technically this was called the 'Model of 1905' since the M numbering system did not begin until the mid-1920s. The blade was 16' in length and the bayonet was 20' overall. Each bayonet had its own unique serial number (range 1 to 1,196,000). The grips were made of wood inset to the metal of the handle. The metal parts of the bayonet were unfinished until about 1917, after which they were parkerized.
The second model M-1905 was manufactured during World War II, in 1942-1943. It is sometimes called the M-1942 model by collectors, but that is not official nomenclature. These bayonets were made by contract suppliers on this list (the letters in parentheses are how the bayonets from this supplier were marked):
Wilde Drop Forge and Tool Company, Kansas City, MO (WT)
Union Fork and Hoe Company, Columbus, OH (UFH)
Oneida, Ltd., Oneida, NY (OL)
American Fork and Hoe Company, Evansville, IN (AFH)
This model is identical to the M-1905 except they were all parkerized and were not as well finished. They had black or brown plastic grips rather than the wood used on the early M-1905 bayonet. They are marked with a year but are not serialized.
Replacement grips were made for the M-1905 so you may find individual examples of any combination of dates and grips.
M-1905E1 Bayonet
World War II operational requirements led to the Ordnance Department decision to shorten the M-1905 bayonet to a 10' blade. Large numbers of the M-1905 bayonets were returned to be remanufactured with 6' taken off and a new tip ground on the blade. There were two styles of tip, a spear point centered on the blade and a Bowie-knife style curved diagonal cut end. These bayonets are referred to as the M-1905E1 bayonet, the name given when in experimental production. Since no distinction was made regarding which M-1905 bayonets in inventory were to be reground, you can find examples of the M-1905E1 with any date markings. As a result of this regrinding, original M-1905 bayonets, especially the early production, are rare today.
In 1943 the M-1 bayonet was introduced with a 10' blade, putting an end to the M-1905E1 program. Since the M-1 was not cut down, its fuller (groove) stops before reaching the blade tip. The M-1905E1 can be easily differentiated because the fuller goes all the way to the tip, since it was cut from the longer M-1905 bayonet.

Scabbard for the M-1905 Bayonet
M-1905 bayonets produced before 1910 had a leather scabbard. That model was replaced by the M-1910 scabbard made of canvas covered wood with a leather tip and with the bent wire pistol belt hook that was first used at that time. The World War II M-1905 bayonets (aka M-1942) came with the M3 olive-drab fiberglass scabbard made by Beckwith Manufacturing, standardized in 1941.
The M-1905E1 10' bayonet used the M3A1 scabbard, a shortened M3.
Bayonet Field Manual
Starting before World War II and continuing into the 1950s, the field manual covering bayonet training was FM 23-25. It gave training instructions for bayonet use in combat. Depending on the date of FM 23-25, different bayonets were illustrated. Another manual, FM 21-150 'Unarmed Defense of the American Soldier' described methods and techniques of bayonet disarming.

The Model of 1905 bayonet was made for the U.S. M1903 Springfield rifle.[2] This designation was changed to Model 1905 in 1917, and then to M1905 in 1925, when the army adopted the M designation nomenclature. The M1905 bayonet has a 16-inch (40.6 cm) blade, and a 4-inch (10.1 cm) handle. The bayonet also fits the U.S. M1 Garand rifle. In 1943, a shorter, 10-inch (25.4 cm), bladed version was produced with a black molded plastic handle, and designated the M1 bayonet.

M1942[edit]

M1942 is the collector designation for the M1905 bayonet with a black molded plastic handle. It was manufactured in sufficient numbers to keep up with wartime production of M1 Garand rifles. The M1942's blade is also 16 inches long with a 4-inch long handle. The M1905 and M1942 bayonets are interchangeable and can be used on both the M1903 Springfield and M1 Garand rifles. The designation M1942 was never officially adopted by the army; all sixteen-inch blade bayonets were referred to as M1905, regardless of the construction of their grips.

M1905E1 and M1 bayonets[edit]

M1 bayonet with black molded plastic handle

In 1943, the U.S. Army decided to shorten the M1905 bayonet's blade to 10 inches (25.4 cm) and as many of the M1905 and M1942 bayonets as possible were recalled, their blades were cut down to size, and were reissued. These shortened M1905 bayonets were re-designated as M1905E1.

The U.S. Army also introduced a new M1 bayonet which was designed to be used with the M1 Garand rifle. The M1 bayonet's blade is 10 inches (25.4 cm) long and the handle is 4 inches (10.1 cm) long.

These shortened bayonets functioned well in the European theater, where in the rare bayonet-actions of the time they were matched up against the 934-inch long blade of the German S84/98 III bayonet fitted on the Karabiner 98k rifle. However, in the Pacific theater, the Japanese used the much longer, 15.75 inches (40.0 cm), bladed Type 30 sword bayonet on the already very long Arisaka rifle, which caused many American troops to retain the longer, unmodified M1905 bayonet.

Scabbards[edit]

U.S Marine sheaths an M-1 bayonet

The original M1905 scabbard had a wooden body with a rawhide cover and employed a wire belt-hanger which went over and around the supporting belt. The M1910 scabbard was covered in canvas with a leather tip. Wire cartridge-belt hooks replaced the belt-hanger. The M1910 scabbard was the primary scabbard used during the First World War. Earlier M1905 scabbards were modified by replacing the belt-hanger with a belt hook. A green-leather bodied M1917 scabbard (designed for the M1917 bayonet) was approved as a substitute for the M1905 bayonet scabbard.

A new scabbard, the M3, was developed early in the Second World War to replace these earlier scabbards. The M3 scabbard had a fiberglass body, with a metal throat, and was equipped with hooks which fixed to the cartridge-belt.[4]
